He skips the usual garages stacked with junk and decrepit automobiles for a clean muscle car that’s ready for the trailer ride back to Texas. Along the way, viewers learn a trick or two about spotting a genuine 1969 Z/28.

Ignoring A Ford Mustang For A Chevy Camaro

Collins arrives at the unnamed seller’s garage and immediately comes across a pristine pale yellow 1965 Ford Mustang hardtop. But he walks past this pony car as his interests are elsewhere. Collins is here for one reason only: take home a 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28.

While Collins usually gives his purchases a once-over before finalizing the transaction, he’s even more thorough with this Chevy. He knows the 302 cubic-inch V8 under the hood is from a newer car, so he wants to make sure everything else about this Camaro is authentic.

He looks under the hood to check out the details, and everything seems to match up. But to be sure, he examines the hidden VIN number beneath the cowl air vent. Collins then remarks that this information is also underneath the heater box. A crawl underneath this Camaro Z/28 verifies zero rust.

Original equipment includes a four-speed manual gearbox (the only way Z/28s came that year), stack gauges, a console, power brakes, and a rosewood steering wheel and dash trim.

Chevrolet built about 200,000 Camaros for the 1969 model year. Of these, 20,000 left the factory as a Z/28. So while these cars aren’t holy grail vehicles, they are still highly coveted by collectors. That keeps valuations high.

Hagerty says a 1969 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is worth $53,200 to $156,000, depending on condition (fair to concours). It’s a challenge to determine a value for Collins’ find because of the engine swap, but the car’s worth easily starts at the bottom of this scale.
