Older Cat Looks Glum While Being in a Shelter Kennel, a Home Changes Everything for Him

An older cat looked glum while being in a shelter kennel. A home changed everything for him.

Merv the cat

A few weeks ago, a senior cat named Merv arrived at PuppyKittyNYCITY after his owner passed away. He was scared and lost, sitting quietly in his kennel, looking glum.

Volunteers took turns to spend time with him and offered pets and loving words, but Merv was overwhelmed by the environment, longing for a place of his own. When he saw a visitor, he approached the kennel door and cried with his raspy meow.

Meagan, president of the rescue, reached out to the community, hoping to find the sweet cat a foster home.

“He’s scared and confused. He deserves to spend his golden years with the perfect person to give him all the love,” Meagan shared.

Merv had a complete checkup at the vet’s office and a dental where he had multiple extractions. He took everything in stride and was relieved that he no longer had to endure discomfort when he ate.

Merv looked sad being in a kennel

After getting all the medical care he needed, Merv never wanted to return to the kennel again.

A wonderful family stepped up and opened their home to the deserving boy. Merv was very nervous at first, spending his first few days hiding in the dark, but the quiet and comfy space and loving people slowly grew on him.

Volunteers took turns to spend time with him

Merv realized there was no more meowing from other cats or noises in the background and that he had plenty of room to roam about and comfortable places to perch on.

Everything in the house intrigued him to come out and explore.

He meowed at volunteers whenever they passed by

He watched as his people went about their day and became familiar with the routines.

“It took him several days to settle in. This week, there was a breakthrough. He is coming out of his shell and even asking for pets.”

Merv had a full checkup and a dental

Everyone at the rescue cheered for Merv’s amazing progress. For the first time since they got him, Merv beamed with confidence, nudging his face against his human for pets.

He no longer retreats into hiding now that he has integrated fully into his foster home. He’s claimed the couch as his throne and lounges beside his people and purrs up a storm.

He finally found a foster home. Days later, he came out of his shell

Merv is a big boy and takes up a large portion of the bed if he lies down with his legs sprawled out. He enjoys the serenity of a quiet home and the company of loving humans.

Merv has officially joined the toothless club since the dental, but what he lacks in ivories, he makes up for in “biscuits”.

He is no longer a shy cat and asks for pets from his people

They’ve discovered that Merv is quite a biscuit-maker. He kneads away in the air whenever he lies down with his people. It’s a sign of comfort and trust and that he finally feels safe.

“He is living it up and making the biscuits in his foster home. All the seniors deserve the good life.”
